How people manage delivery dates is one of my my pet hates. Some people tell you what they think you want to hear, whereas in my experience most people just want to hear the truth.
I spend all day planning work and think I'm pretty good at identifying things that may delay a milestone. There will always be truly unexpected exceptions but feed these back into your estimation process for next time...
What I would like to hear is, if you know something will take about a week to do but might take a few days longer if certain other things happen - tell me and explain what might occur to delay it and keep me updated as soon as you know there might be a delay - don't tell me when I come to pick it up after a week it'll be three days more... I have to plan too!

Hi Gareth, I've heard the four-minute rule before, possibly from Steve - I think he spoke at a networking event I attended. I've tried it too and it makes such a difference to the rest of the family's mood (yes, even the dog, although the cat doesn't seem interested, surprise, surprise!!) for the rest of the evening. And its true, you only have to be "present and fully focused" for four minutes, then they don't really notice what else you do ... quite liberating!! Thank you for sharing it and reminding me how important it is!!

Sara - Loved your article....I'm interested to know how your social media experiment has gone, I hope you have been successful. Sounds like you used several platforms to get 'the message out there'......so did you find a buyer?

Brilliant post. We at http://www.busybeecandles.co.uk are ardent tweeters and to an extent Face Booke'rs. We find the social interaction between us as people and our customers 1. great fun, 2. a great tool to spread the word about our products and service. Totally agree w/ your stand point regarding the merging of the business persona and that of the people behind it. We are totally open on twitter with pictures of our dogs etc. Social media is a personal platform and that is often forgotten by big business. These are real people your talking to who don't just want to buy your stuff but want to get to know you, IMHO (LOL). Long live the social media revolution. :)xx
